Mindful Communication: Listening to Understand
Most people listen with the intent to reply rather than the intent to understand. Mindful communication reverses this. When someone is speaking, give them your full attention. Put your phone away. Make eye contact. Do not formulate your response while they are still talking. Reflect back what you heard and ask if you understood correctly. This alone transforms the quality of conversations. Notice your internal reactions without immediately acting on them. The urge to defend yourself, offer advice, or share your own similar experience is natural, but pausing that impulse creates space for the other person to feel truly heard. Ask open-ended questions that invite elaboration rather than yes or no answers. The quality of your relationships is largely determined by the quality of your listening.
