Collecting Moments Not Things

The most memorable experiences of your life probably do not involve purchases. They involve moments. The feeling of cold lake water on a hot day. The view from the top of a trail you were not sure you could finish. The conversation with a stranger on a train that you still think about years later. Objects degrade. Moments become memories, and memories, unlike physical possessions, can actually improve with age. The trip that was stressful and rainy at the time becomes the funny story you tell at dinner parties. Experiences also connect you to other people in ways that objects cannot. You can show someone your new watch. You cannot share the feeling of reaching the summit, unless they were there too. Shared experiences create bonds. Shared objects create comparison. This is not an argument against owning nice things. It is an argument for allocating more of your resources, time, money, and attention, toward experiences rather than acquisitions. At the end of your life you will not wish you had bought more things. You will wish you had done more things, with more people you loved, in more places that took your breath away.

You are allowed to enjoy your life even when things are not perfect.

You belong here, in this moment, exactly as you are.

At the end of your life, you will measure your wealth in moments, not objects. Start collecting now, while the days are still unfolding and the possibilities are still open.

Peace is not the absence of difficulty. It is the ability to remain steady within it.

Your daily rhythms shape who you become. Choose them with intention, not default.

Happiness is found in ordinary moments. Notice them.

The quality of your attention determines the quality of your life.
