Swimming in Natural Water

There is a quality to swimming in a lake, river, or ocean that no pool can replicate. The water is alive. It moves around you. It has a temperature that is not controlled by a thermostat. It has a bottom that is not painted blue. Swimming in natural water connects you to your body in a primal way. The shock of cold water on skin triggers an immediate physiological response, a sharp intake of breath, a quickening heart rate, followed by a sense of being intensely alive. You cannot be distracted while swimming in cold water. The sensation demands your full attention. Afterward, there is an afterglow. Your skin tingles. Your mind feels clearer. The effects of cold water on mood and inflammation have been studied, but the science is secondary to the direct experience. Find a safe place to swim outdoors. Go with someone who knows the water if you are unfamiliar. Start in summer when the water is warm. Notice the difference between this and a pool.

The present moment is the only one you ever actually live in.

The meaning of life is the meaning you give to this moment.

Natural water is alive and does not care about your comfort zone. Swimming in it is a conversation with something older and wilder than you. Feel the difference.

Take a moment to breathe. The world will wait. Simple joys are always there for those who pause long enough to notice them.

You do not need permission to enjoy your life as it is, right now, imperfections and all.

Peace is not the absence of difficulty. It is the ability to remain steady within it.

Simple joys are the threads that weave a good life together.

Happiness is found in ordinary moments. Notice them.
