How to Stay Active When You Have a Desk Job

Prolonged sitting is associated with increased risks of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and back pain, independent of how much you exercise. The solution is not necessarily a standing desk. It is interrupting sitting periods frequently. Set a timer to remind yourself to stand and move for at least two minutes every hour. Take phone calls standing or walking. Use a smaller water glass so you have to get up to refill it more often. Park farther from the entrance or get off public transit one stop early. Suggest walking meetings with colleagues when a screen is not required. These small movements throughout the day add up to significant health benefits and are more sustainable than trying to compensate for eight hours of sitting with one hour of intense exercise.

Small consistent actions create the most lasting changes. Thank you for being part of our community.
